18 June, 2020

On Thursday June 18th, 2020, the Glocal Program launched its Annual Magazine, written and edited by Glocal alumni and students.

This year, the Magazine focuses on international development in the context of cities, urban renewal, urban migration and city lives. Glocal International Development goes online

31 March, 2020

Due to the Coronavirus epidemic, the Hebrew University, similarly to many universities around the world, has shifted all of its teaching to an online method. At Glocal, we began the second semester this week, offering interactive online courses in a variety of topics ranging from “Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation”, “Public Health and Development”, to “Migration, Refugees and Development”, as well as a new course on “Development in Conflict Zones”. Lecturers employ a variety of teaching methods and Glocal students are closely supported both by staff and by our own “buddy system”. We continue to run our mini-practicum and plan for the 2020 internships. We constantly adapt to the changing circumstances and ensure that our students gain the best academic knowledge, practical skills and experience, particularly in the current uncertain

environment.

Glocal Magazine 2019 Event Launch

5 May, 2019

Every year Glocal produces a magazine centered around a chosen theme, that is relevant to the field of International Development. In 2019 the magazine focused on the relations between Development and the Environment, the content throughout the event explored this topic from various angles. Our honored keynote speaker was Prof. Alon Tal (Tel-Aviv University) which discussed the tension between Development and the Environment from a more macro level, through elaborating on environmental policies. We had two short presentation from two alumni Alon Cohen Lifshitz and Hannah Reinl with stories from the field. We ended with a panel discussion that focused on environment and sustainability looking from local knowledge systems while exploring community development through environmental projects. The panel was moderated by Rina Kedem who worked over the last years with the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) on environmental projects across the region with a focus on the nexus between community empowerment, environment and regional cooperation.

Glocal's Magazine 2018 on the issue of Gender & Development - great launch and discussion

26 February, 2018

The Glocal Magazine was launched in Tel-Aviv on Friday the 16th February 2018. This year’s magazine’s topic was about a Gender Approach in Development. The successful event saw presentations by magazine writers about their work and a panel discussion on the various approaches to recognize and acknowledge gender  related issues in the context of social and international development. In the discussion, Dr. Nira Kaplansky from the Women's Courtyard, Helen Gebremehdin from the Eritren Women Community center and our alumna N’aama Gorodischer from Israaid presented their ongoing work in relation to gender issues in different contexts.

Discussion in the panel, as well as the thought provoking questions from the public highlighted how separated spaces are important to allow women, in particular, to enjoy more fully development initiatives. This issue of separated spaces, where women can feel free and safer, was a clear thread-line experienced in different developing situations. It was interesting to see how this approach was used both in Israel and in developing countries or humanitarian contexts.  In addition, the debate showed how very often “gender” and “women” are taken to be identical, and why this is a problematic confusion.

The event, organised in the colourful and international setting of the Abraham Hostel and drew a crowd of students, alumni, activitists, academics and even tourists from the hostel.

The Glocal programme has for ambition to continue being a focal point for both development work and academic research in Israel, and the programme’s magazine is the best example of the programme mission and success.
