Community Building - An infrastructure for development

This course explores the sociological, cultural and political meanings of ‘community’ and community building, and offers students of international development both analytical and practical tools to approach dilemmas arising in the field related to community building. We will address together such topics as community and solidarity between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft; the ambiguous role of the stranger who intervenes in the community; communities, social boundaries and the inside/outside divide; and diverse approaches and practices of community development in the Israeli and global context, analyzing these practices from a comparative and critical perspective.

Course/Module aims: 
To offer students of international development both analytical and practical tools to cope with dilemmas related to community development.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 
display in-depth understanding of various approaches to community development, and apply these approaches to practical dilemmas arising in the field.
