Scholarships
The Hebrew University offers extensive scholarships and financial support for Ethiopian students. This comes from years of experience in addressing the barriers they face: from the mindset that universities and their sought-after departments are unattainable, to difficulties in choosing fields of study, but mainly the financial challenges, as university studies are often demanding and do not allow for working alongside studies, especially during the first year of a degree.
Academic Support
The Equal Opportunities Unit runs an academic mentoring program to develop academic excellence among students. Mentoring is provided by senior students either individually or in groups, covering both department courses and English language studies. Additionally, when student association marathons are held, funding can be provided for them in advance, in coordination with the unit coordinators.
Subsidized University Psychological Services
The university’s Psychological Services offers individualized support for crises, stress, anxiety, or other emotional difficulties. The Equal Opportunities Unit subsidizes treatment, alongside a required student co-payment.
-
To request assistance, submit an online request to Psychological Services and mention eligibility for Equal Opportunities Unit support.
-
Students using this service must sign a confidentiality waiver, which is used strictly for payment authorization and does not disclose treatment details.
Financial Assistance for English Studies
The unit provides funding for up to 15% of the institutional support budget for English language courses:
-
700 NIS for engineering, science, and medical students
-
500 NIS for students in other disciplines
Support will be provided to each student based on their individual needs – with a balance maintained between financial and academic assistance, and with a systemic, holistic approach to addressing the overall needs of all students. The primary goal is to prevent dropout rates and promote academic excellence by prioritizing educational needs. If additional funds remain, housing or transportation costs may also be reimbursed.
Subsidized Learning Disability Assessments
The Unit for Assessment and Support for Students with Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders at the Dean of Students Office facilitates diagnostic assessments for students experiencing difficulties that may stem from learning disabilities or ADHD. The subsidy amount is approximately 1,500 NIS.
Dormitory Housing Assistance
Students residing in university dormitories are eligible for financial assistance covering up to 30% of the institutional support (approximately 1,400 NIS for science, engineering, and medical students, and approximately 1,000 NIS for students in other fields). The funds will be provided in March or August of the current academic year.
Rental Assistance
Students renting an apartment are eligible for rental payment assistance of up to 30% of the institutional support (approximately 1,400 NIS for science, engineering, and medical students, and approximately 1,000 NIS for students in other fields). Eligibility is contingent upon submission of a lease agreement bearing the student's name and valid for the entire academic year (i.e., from the first day of the academic year until its conclusion). Lease agreements must be submitted to the unit coordinators no later than May 31.
In the current academic year, funds will be provided in March (for students who submit their request by the end of January), or in August.
Reimbursement of Travel Expenses
Travel expense reimbursements will be provided to students who do not receive housing or rental assistance, for up to 30% of the institutional support. In the current academic year, students may receive up to 1,480 NIS for science, engineering, and medical students and up to 1,080 NIS for students in other disciplines, based on a valid subscription contract (fixed-term public transportation pass) and a scanned copy of their Rav-Kav card showing their details.
Students must submit their contract and Rav-Kav copy to the unit coordinators no later than May 31 of the current academic year. Funds will be provided in March (for students who submit their request by the end of January) or August of the current academic year.
Students residing in dormitories on the campus where they study are not eligible for travel reimbursements.
Language-Based Exam Accommodations
Ethiopian-Israeli students are eligible for a 25% time extension on exams conducted in Hebrew during their first two years of one degree program, provided they do not hold a prior academic degree completed in Hebrew.
The application for approval opens at the beginning of the academic year and closes approximately one month before the exam period of the first (fall) semester. The approval is valid for the entire academic year. At the beginning of the second (spring) semester, the application period reopens for a limited time for those who did not apply in the first semester.
Students can generate this approval independently through the Personal Information Website under "Studies,” in the "Accommodations for Difficulties with the Hebrew Language" tab.
If students encounter issues with obtaining the approval or exercising their eligibility, they should contact the Student Administration Division through the university’s inquiry system on the Personal Information Website. Under "Academic/Administrative Unit," select "Student Administration Division," and under "Recipient/Topic," select "Questions Regarding Nahal Regulations."
