Ori is a trumpet player and a music librarian at the National Library. In his MA thesis he interviewed 10 prominent jazz teachers and performers in order to obtain insights about developing creativity in the beginner jazz student. Using qualitative analysis methods he identified recurring themes regarding the tension between pattern-based training (scales, chords, licks) which enables fast automatic retrieval, and breaking away from the automatic pilot (being “more creative”). One such emerging theme was the use of exercises that impose different constraints which reduce the cognitive load and encourage exploration of new possibilities.
