Microbial adaptation to changing environmental conditions is frequently mediated by hypermutable sequences. Here we demonstrate that such a hypermutable hotspot within a gene encoding a flagellar unit of generated spontaneous non-swarming mutants with increased stress resistance. These mutants, which survived conditions that eliminated wild-type cultures, could be carried by their swarming siblings when the colony spread, consequently increasing their numbers at the spreading edge. Of interest, the hypermutable nature of the aforementioned sequence enabled the non-swarming mutants to serve as "seeds" for a new generation of wild-type cells through reversion of the mutation. Using a mathematical model, we examined the survival dynamics of colonies under fluctuating environments. Our experimental and theoretical results suggest that the non-swarming, stress-resistant mutants can save the colony from extinction. Notably, we identified this hypermutable sequence in flagellar genes of additional species, suggesting that this phenomenon could be wide-spread and ecologically important.

There are two main life cycles in plants—annual and perennial1,2. These life cycles are associated with different traits that determine ecosystem function3,4. Although life cycles are textbook examples of plant adaptation to different environments, we lack comprehensive knowledge regarding their global distributional patterns. Here we assembled an extensive database of plant life cycle assignments of 235,000 plant species coupled with millions of georeferenced datapoints to map the worldwide biogeography of these plant species. We found that annual plants are half as common as initially thought5–8, accounting for only 6% of plant species. Our analyses indicate that annuals are favoured in hot and dry regions. However, a more accurate model shows that the prevalence of annual species is driven by temperature and precipitation in the driest quarter (rather than yearly means), explaining, for example, why some Mediterranean systems have more annuals than desert systems. Furthermore, this pattern remains consistent among different families, indicating convergent evolution. Finally, we demonstrate that increasing climate variability and anthropogenic disturbance increase annual favourability. Considering future climate change, we predict an increase in annual prevalence for 69% of the world’s ecoregions by 2060. Overall, our analyses raise concerns for ecosystem services provided by perennial plants, as ongoing changes are leading to a higher proportion of annual plants globally.

Nanochemistry provides powerful synthetic tools allowing one to combine different materials on a single nanostructure, thus unfolding numerous possibilities to tailor their properties toward diverse functionalities. yuval_david_2023Herein, we review the progress in the field of semiconductor–metal hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) focusing on metal–chalcogenides–metal combined systems. The fundamental principles of their synthesis are discussed, leading to a myriad of possible hybrid architectures including Janus zero-dimensional quantum dot-based systems and anisotropic quasi 1D nanorods and quasi-2D platelets. The properties of HNPs are described with particular focus on emergent synergetic characteristics. Of these, the light-induced charge-separation effect across the semiconductor–metal nanojunction is of particular interest as a basis for the utilization of HNPs in photocatalytic applications. The extensive studies on the charge-separation behavior and its dependence on the HNPs structural characteristics, environmental and chemical conditions, and light excitation regime are surveyed. Combining the advanced synthetic control with the charge-separation effect has led to demonstration of various applications of HNPs in different fields. A particular promise lies in their functionality as photocatalysts for a variety of uses, including solar-to-fuel conversion, as a new type of photoinitiator for photopolymerization and 3D printing, and in novel chemical and biomedical uses.

Previous research has established that men are more likely to vote for populist radical right parties (PRRPs) than women. This article shows how cross-national and temporal variations in PRRPs’ electoral success interact with individuals’ risk propensity to affect this gender gap. We hypothesize that gender differences in the electoral support of PRRPs stem from disparities in risk-taking. We conceptualize risk in terms of two components, social and electoral, and demonstrate that women are more risk-averse regarding both. Our analysis is based on public opinion data from 14 countries (2002–16) combined with macrolevel data on PRRPs’ past parliamentary fortunes. To distinguish between the social and electoral components in risk-taking, we use the illustrative case study of Germany. Findings demonstrate that gender differences in risk-taking and, by implication, the differences between women’s and men’s responses to the electoral context are key to understanding the voting gender gap.

Roles For The Synechococcus Elongatus Rna-Binding Protein Rbp2 In Regulating The Circadian Clock. J. Biol. Rhythms, 38, Pp. 447–460. תקציר
The cyanobacterial circadian oscillator, consisting of KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC proteins, drives global rhythms of gene expression and compaction of the chromosome and regulates the timing of cell division and natural transformation. While the KaiABC posttranslational oscillator can be reconstituted in vitro, the Kai-based oscillator is subject to several layers of regulation in vivo. Specifically, the oscillator proteins undergo changes in their subcellular localization patterns, where KaiA and KaiC are diffuse throughout the cell during the day and localized as a focus at or near the pole of the cell at night. Here, we report that the CI domain of KaiC, when in a hexameric state, is sufficient to target KaiC to the pole. Moreover, increased ATPase activity of KaiC correlates with enhanced polar localization. We identified proteins associated with KaiC in either a localized or diffuse state. We found that loss of Rbp2, found to be associated with localized KaiC, results in decreased incidence of KaiC localization and long-period circadian phenotypes. Rbp2 is an RNA-binding protein, and it appears that RNA-binding activity of Rbp2 is required to execute clock functions. These findings uncover previously unrecognized roles for Rbp2 in regulating the circadian clock and suggest that the proper localization of KaiC is required for a fully functional clock in vivo.

This paper describes the vision, framework, challenges, and implementation of the Jerusalem History Knowledge Center (JHKC) initiated by the late Ronnie Ellenblum. The center’s establishment was configured as a joint project of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), the National Library of Israel (NLI), and the Israel Antiquities Authorities (IAA). Its primary mission and challenge were to establish a long-term digital infrastructure constituting an open-access platform about the history of Jerusalem, which draws on diverse sources, such as archaeological records, historical documents, pilgrims’ accounts, old and new photographs and videos, architectural reconstructions, etc. The first stages included the classification of databases about two sites in Jerusalem: the Citadel—Tower of David and the Damascus Gate. As part of this work, we implemented a unified search in interdisciplinary databases regarding a specific geographical area or a single monument. The center’s products will eventually operate at two levels: at the research level, facilitating work in the fields of history, archeology, art, geography, social sciences, etc., and at the popular level, serving the general public.

Cellular respiration involves complex organellar metabolic activities that are pivotal for plant growth and development. Mitochondria contain their own genetic system (mitogenome, mtDNA), which encodes key elements of the respiratory machinery. Plant mtDNAs are notably larger than their counterparts in Animalia, with complex genome organization and gene expression characteristics. The maturation of the plant mitochondrial transcripts involves extensive RNA editing, trimming and splicing events. These essential processing steps rely on the activities of numerous nuclear-encoded cofactors, which may also play key regulatory roles in mitochondrial biogenesis and function and hence in plant physiology. Proteins that harbor the plant organelle RNA recognition (PORR) domain are represented in a small gene family in plants. Several PORR members, including WTF1, WTF9 and LEFKOTHEA, are known to act in the splicing of organellar group II introns in angiosperms. The AT4G33495 gene locus encodes an essential PORR protein in Arabidopsis, termed ROOT PRIMORDIUM DEFECTIVE 1 (RPD1). A null mutation of At.RPD1 causes arrest in early embryogenesis, while the missense mutant lines, rpd1.1 and rpd1.2, exhibit a strong impairment in root development and retarded growth phenotypes, especially under high-temperature conditions. Here, we further show that RPD1 functions in the splicing of introns that reside in the coding regions of various complex I (CI) subunits (i.e. nad2, nad4, nad5 and nad7), as well as in the maturation of the ribosomal rps3 pre-RNA in Arabidopsis mitochondria. The altered growth and developmental phenotypes and modified respiration activities are tightly correlated with respiratory chain CI defects in rpd1 mutants.

This chapter narrates the history of Sanskrit poetic theory (Alaṅkāraśāstra) from the perspective of Dandin’s Mirror of Literature (Kāvyādarśa). It begins with a brief discussion of Dandin’s predecessors and their potential influence on him. Then follows an analysis of Dandin’s reception in Kashmir, home to a series of theorists who dominated the field of poetics beginning in the eighth century. The heart of the chapter is dedicated to Dandin’s most significant commentator, the tenth-century Sinhalese Buddhist monk Ratnashrijnana. It shows how this commentator responded to and extended fundamental aspects of the Mirror such as its openness and modularity. The chapter also shows Ratnashrijnana as steeped in both the world of Sanskrit court literati and that of the Buddhist community and its literature and values. The chapter concludes by the responses to the Mirror by a host of later medieval and early modern thinkers, most significantly King Bhoja (r. ca. 1010–1055) and Appayya Dikshita (ca. 1520–1592).
