We perform real-time measurements of the net contact area between two blocks of like material at the onset of frictional slip. We show that the process of interface detachment, which immediately precedes the inception of frictional sliding, is governed by three different types of detachment fronts. These crack-like detachment fronts differ by both their propagation velocities and by the amount of net contact surface reduction caused by their passage. The most rapid fronts propagate at intersonic velocities but generate a negligible reduction in contact area across the interface. Sub-Rayleigh fronts are crack-like modes which propagate at velocities up to the Rayleigh wave speed, V R, and give rise to an approximate 10% reduction in net contact area. The most efficient contact area reduction ( 20%) is precipitated by the passage of ‘slow detachment fronts’. These fronts propagate at ‘anomalously’ slow velocities, which are over an order of magnitude lower than V R yet orders of magnitude higher than other characteristic velocity scales such as either slip or loading velocities. Slow fronts are generated, in conjunction with intersonic fronts, by the sudden arrest of sub-Rayleigh fronts. No overall sliding of the interface occurs until either of the slower two fronts traverses the entire interface, and motion at the leading edge of the interface is initiated. Slip at the trailing edge of the interface accompanies the motion of both the slow and sub-Rayleigh fronts. We might expect these modes to be important in both fault nucleation and earthquake dynamics.

תקציר Compared with conventional external beam radiation, brachytherapy offers a superior therapeutic regimen. However, some major constraints are associated with its implementation, including the need of complicated procedures for device placement and removal. The purpose of this study was to examine whether crosslinked chitosan (Ct) implants could serve as potential biodegradable devices for brachytherapy. Ct was reacted with increasing amounts of glutaraldehyde to obtain hydrogels with different crosslinking densities, which were characterized chemically, thermally and mechanically. The effect of the dialysis medium conditions (ionic strength, osmolarity and pH) on the gel hydration and in vivo degradation was assessed. Two types of implants, slow and fast degrading gel (SDG and FDG, respectively), were prepared and implanted with or without Sudan Black (SB) in the rat. While SDG withstood for over a month, the FDG degraded within two weeks after implantation. The release kinetics of SB from the hydrogels verified their in vivo degradation properties. The incorporation of the radioactive compound (131)I-norcholesterol ((131)I-NC) into the SDG altered the degradation kinetics of the gel as reflected by the release kinetics of the radioactive marker. Eighty percent of (131)I-NC was released within a month after implantation, after which time, radioactivity was detected in the regional lymph nodes. Histological examination of the tissues surrounding the implants demonstrated negligible tissue response to the implants, when compared to biodegradable surgical sutures. It is concluded that hydrogels made of crosslinked Ct are potential novel, safe, degradable devices for brachytherapy.
Explanations of the emergence of regional autonomy movements - political organizations seeking to express sub-state affinities and interests - often highlight cultural differences and economic incentives as important reasons driving regional elites and local politicians to form such organization and explain the support regional autonomy movements receive. In this paper I employ a specialized agent-based computer simulation as a laboratory for ‘thought experiments’ to evaluate alternative theoretical expectations of the independent and combined consequences of regional economic and cultural circumstances on the likelihood of regional mobilization. The simulations suggest that pronounced cultural differences and strong economic incentives contribute to the emergence of three independent yet related aspects of autonomy mobilization: the emergence of political boundaries, minority support, and minority clustering. Furthermore, these experiment indicate that the impact of cultural differences on the emergence of political boundaries may be contingent on the strength of the economic incentives, and visa versa.

“Cyclooxygenase-2 (Ptgs2) Inhibitors Augment The Rate Of Hexose Transport In L6 Myotubes In An Insulin- And Ampkalpha-Independent Manner.”. Diabetologia, 49, 3, Pp. 562–570. doi:10.1007/s00125-005-0122-2.
תקציר AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Some cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2, also known as prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 [PTGS2]) inhibitors have been shown to increase insulin sensitivity in man or induce hypoglycaemic episodes when overconsumed or taken in combination with oral hypoglycaemic drugs. These side-effects and their impact on patients are not always recognised in routine clinical practice. We investigated whether these side-effects of COX2 (PTGS2) inhibitors result from stimulation of the glucose transport system in skeletal muscle cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: L6 myotube cultures were used to study effects of COX2 (PTGS2) inhibitors on the glucose transport system and their relationship to PTGS2 expression, insulin action and AMP-activated protein kinase alpha (AMPKalpha) activity. RESULTS: The inhibitors niflumic acid, nimesulide and rofecoxib increased the rate of hexose uptake in L6 myotubes in the absence of insulin and in a dose- and time-dependent manner. They did this by increasing the total cell content of member 4 of the solute carrier family 2 (SCLC2A4, previously known as glucose transporter 4 [GLUT4]) (but not SCLC2A1 [previously known as GLUT1]) mRNA and protein and the amount of it in the plasma membrane. AMPKalpha was not involved in the latter effect since the inhibitors did not activate it. In addition, none of the inhibitors modulated the rate of hexose transport in vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells expressing PTGS2 and SCLC2A1. Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1 (also known as cyclooxygenase 1) inhibitors (acetylsalicylic acid and indomethacin) did not alter the rate of hexose uptake and SCLC2A4 subcellular distribution in L6 myotubes. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: This study suggests that certain COX2 (PTGS2) inhibitors can alter glucose homeostasis in vivo by stimulating glucose uptake in skeletal muscles that express PTGS2.
Barbara Pym’s novels of the 1950s are generally devoted to the representation of the life of educated single gentlewomen, but when she does choose to depict men, they do not conform to contemporary ideas of masculinity. This paper demonstrates Pym’s ambiguous treatment of several types of male characters and the traditional association between homosexuality and the Anglo-Catholic faction of the Anglican Church. Although in her presentation Pym refers to popular cultural attitudes and clichés, which were clear to her target audience but have to be explicated today (more than 50 years later), this use of stereotypes does not amount to moral judgment or condemnation. On the contrary, in a decade when homosexuals were outlawed and demonized, Pym represents them sympathetically and their lifestyle as a legitimate and somewhat intriguing choice. January 2006: Orna Raz has recently completed her PhD dissertation at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is a lecturer at the College of Management, Rishon LeTsion and a translator of Hebrew poetry and prose works. Her forthcoming book is devoted to the representation of contemporary social realities in the novels of Barbara Pym. |

orna_raz.jpgAs a child the Serbian-Jewish author Danilo Kiš witnessed the massacre of the so called “cold days” in Novi Sad in 1942, when thousands of Jewish and Serbian inhabitants were executed by the fascists and their corpses thrown into the Danube, and the disappearance of his father who perished in Auschwitz. As an adult he was witness to the dictatorship of Titoist Yugoslavia. His narratives focus on Fascism and Stalinism insisting on their purely literary representation. Relying on the documentary character of autobiographical testimony (Karlo Stejner’s Seven Thousand Days in Siberia), the “real” story of mystifications (Protocols of the Elders of Zion), the semantic energy of fictive documents, and the charm of story-telling, Kiš creates a multilayered, highly artificial narrative compositum. He combines the literary experience of Russian avant-garde “factography” (literatura fakta, 1929) with the puzzling effect of documentary simulacra without resuming the ludistic implication of this procedure, which – as he is well aware – is an integral element of Borges’s poetics. Without ignoring the intertextual orientation of Kiš’s text, the paper concentrates on the mnemonic dimension of his narratives, on the stylistics of anti-pathos and litotes, on the semantic coalition of “factography” and “thanatography,” and discusses the problem of hyperbole/understatement in virtual documents. The purpose of the study is to explore, in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the influence of framing a decision task as inclusion or exclusion on Israeli-Jewish respondents' support for the concession of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. Respondents received a list of 40 Jewish settlements. Details such as the number of residents and geographical location were provided for each settlement. The respondents were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. In the inclusion condition 55 respondents were asked to mark the settlements for which they recommended that Israeli sovereignty be conceded. In the exclusion condition 53 respondents were asked to mark the settlements for which they recommended that Israeli sovereignty not be conceded. The findings confirm the predictions tested and indicate that: (1) Framing the task in terms of inclusion or exclusion affects respondents' support for territorial compromise, so that respondents in the exclusion condition support the concession of more settlements than respondents in the inclusion condition. (2) Framing the task in terms of inclusion or exclusion has a greater effect on support for conceding options (settlements) that are perceived as ambiguous (less consensual in the climate of opinion) in comparison to options (settlements) that are perceived as more clear-cut (more consensual). The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

After a latency period, the American cinema is processing the trauma of defeat in the Vietnam War. In these films, defeat is repressed but the defeated male is present. Central to the texts is a profound loss of self, incoherence at the gendered core of masculine identity, the failure to conform to the heteronormative mythical model, loss of traditional affiliations (representability of the social order, fatherhood, brotherhood), tortured body, and shattering of sexuality. All three models of post-traumatic masculinity subvert the identification between masculinity, patriarchy, and nationalism.Requset full text

https://bit.ly/2wWTFivThis article presents a study conducted among 148 men from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Israel. A self-administered questionnaire was utilized to examine their definitions of and beliefs about wife abuse. The definitions provided by the majority of the participants were highly consistent with definitions that are accepted in the professional literature. The majority of participants tended to view wife abuse as unjustified and held violent husbands responsible for their behavior. They were also in favor of helping women who were abused. At the same time, however, some participants showed a tendency to blame women for violence against them and indicated that the reasons why women stay with husbands who are abusive can be attributed more to external factors than to her internal situation. Substantial amounts of the variance in the participants' definitions of and beliefs about wife abuse can be explained by the extent of their patriarchal ideology. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed.
