Soft lithography techniques have become leading mesoscale approaches for replicating topographic features in polymer films. So far, the modified polymer films formed by soft lithography only featured topographic heterogeneity. Here we demonstrate the application of soft lithography techniques to block copolymer films, and show that the preferential affinity of one of the blocks to the stamping material leads to chemical heterogeneity that corresponds to the topographic features. Detailed surface and structural characterization of the patterned films provided information on its three-dimensional structure, revealing insights on the domain reorganization that takes place in the block copolymer film concomitantly with topography formation. The formed structures were utilized for selective assembly of gold nanoparticles into hierarchical structures. The versatility of this combined nanofabrication/self-assembly approach was demonstrated by the assembly of two types of metallic nanoparticles into two different arrangements with full control over the location of each type of nanoparticles.

Two years have passed since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire world is still struggling with the virus and its mutations, and governments have been imposing various restrictions, including social distancing and quarantine. This paper leans on the Conservation of Resources (COR) theoretical model in comparing the impact of COVID-19 with that of an ongoing threat of terror attacks, allowing us to understand the similarities and differences between them. Such exploration could result in an understanding that may guide devising psycho-social interventions to minimize the negative psychological consequences of a continuous life-threatening situation. By applying the extensive available literature on the aftermath of terrorist attacks to the little-known long-run consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper comes up with several guidelines such as increasing online social support and enhancing adaptive coping with stress, that are applicable on the individual, community, and societal levels.

תקציר OBJECTIVES: Recently, preoperative and intraoperative simulation using three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) has attracted much attention in thoracic surgery. However, because conventional three-dimensional CT only shows static images, dynamic simulation is required for a more precise operation. We previously reported on a resection process map for pulmonary resection, which we developed to generate virtual dynamic images from preoperative patient-specific CT scans. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the clinical use of the resection process map for anatomical lung resection. METHODS: This study included 5 lobectomies for different lobes and 4 representative segmentectomies. Dissection of the pulmonary arteries, veins and bronchi were considered key parts of each procedure. To assess the description of images obtained from the resection process map, relevant clips from the actual surgical videos were collected, retrospectively replicated and superimposed on the resection process map to explain the procedures. RESULTS: In all surgical procedures, the resection process map successfully and semiautomatically generated a virtual dynamic image from the patient-specific CT data. Moreover, superimposition of the virtual images on the selected clips from the surgical videos showed no major differences. CONCLUSIONS: The resection process map could generate virtual images that corresponded to the actual surgical videos and has the potential for clinical use as preoperative and intraoperative simulation.

Publisher's Version תקציר Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes are often mixed with rigid, nonconductive polymers to improve mechanical strength. The suppressed conductivity of the mixture typically arises from a reduced segmental mobility and a diminished connectivity between conductive PEO sites. To decouple these two mechanisms, we compare transport in symmetric miscible blends and disordered block copolymers (BCP) of PEO and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Because the two systems have identical physicochemical properties, differences in their conductivity directly reflect the underlying PEO network connectivity. We find that, at short distances (<5 Å), the Li+ solvation networks are identical for the two systems; however, a distinct variation in the network connectivity arises at length scales between 5 and 10 Å. Specifically, the BCP exhibits a lower connectivity, and therefore a lower conductivity than the blend. A quantitative model is proposed that associates long-range Li+ transport with local miscibility; the concept of network connectivity discussed here could be useful for designing polymer electrolyte systems.

Publisher's Version תקציר We explored the structural features of recombinant ostreolysin A (rOlyA), a protein produced by Pleurotus ostreatus and responsible for binding to α/β-tubulin. We found that rOlyA cell internalization is essential for the induction of adipocyte-associated activity, which is mediated by the interaction of rOlyA and microtubule proteins. We created different point mutations at conserved tryptophan (W) sites in rOlyA and analyzed their biological activity in HIB-1B preadipocytes. We demonstrated that the protein’s cell-internalization ability and the differentiated phenotype induced, such as small lipid-droplet formation and gene expression of mitogenesis activity, were impaired in point-mutated proteins W96A and W28A, where W was converted to alanine (A). We also showed that an rOlyA homologue, OlyA6 complexed with mCherry, cannot bind to β-tubulin and does not induce mitochondrial biosynthesis-associated markers, suggesting that the OlyA6 region masked by mCherry is involved in β-tubulin binding. Protein–protein docking simulations were carried out to investigate the binding mode of rOlyA with β-tubulin. Taken together, we identified functional sites in rOlyA that are essential for its binding to β-tubulin and its adipocyte-associated biological activity.
The Gulag Archipelago has been treated consistently as a conservative indictment of the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union. When subsumed into his later writings, this perception has reinforced amongst progressives an enduring portrait of Solzhenitsyn-the-man as a backward-looking anti-modernist and reactionary. I advocate a return to the text itself in isolation from Solzhenitsyn’s corpus, and in a manner more cognizant of the political practices latent in its prose. In its style and structure, certain specific techniques can be found where the search for formal methodology has left previous commentators on the Left disappointed. The place of Solzhenitsyn’s magnum opus in the history of political thought is here reassessed on the basis of its style, pointing to its potential contribution to critical theory and to its relevance for critical social analysis today.
