Course description: This is a first course on chemical thermodynamics, covering basic concepts, including: intermolecular interactions and phase transitions, The first law, heat, work and energy, The second law, classical and statistical definitions of entropy, chemical reactivity, and solutions and their phase diagrams.
A first course in statistical thermodynamics with chemical applications. Fundumentals of probability. The relations between statistical thermodynamics and classical thermodynamics. Second law and entropy maximization. Thermodynamic ensembles and partition functions. System of non interacting particles. Ideal gas. Chemical equilibrium. Langmuir adsorption. Electrolyte solutions and Poisson-Boltzmann. Applications to chemical and biochemical problems and systems.
