Structure of Graduate Studies (Master)

A Master's degree (MA, MSc, etc.) is usually completed in two years. A few programs can be completed within one year (3 semesters, including Summer semester).

Study Tracks

  • Research - in this track students are required to write a thesis.
  • Non-Research - the track does not include a thesis but requires additional courses and seminars. Students who complete this track and then decide to pursue a doctoral degree are required to register as supplementary PhD students and write a thesis.

Generally, graduate (Master) studies are based on undergraduate studies in the same field. Differences in curriculum and course content may necessitate supplementary studies.

Supplementary Studies

In some departments, applicants with little or no background may be considered for a supplementary program before being admitted to the Master's degree program. The extent of the supplementary program may vary from a few courses to two full years of studies, depending on the departmental requirements.
Supplementary studies consist of undergraduate (Bachelor) courses taught in Hebrew. Therefore, applicants accepted to supplementary studies need to meet Hebrew proficiency requirements even if the Master's program is taught in English.

Supplementary PhD

Candidates who have completed a Master's program in the non-research track (without thesis) and wish to complete doctoral studies (PhD) have the opportunity to apply to the Supplementary PhD program.
Candidates are required to find a supervisor to guide the writing of their thesis. A letter by the supervisor must be added to the online application.
Most students are only required to write a thesis, but Supplementary PhD studies might include course participation.
The tuition fee for the Supplementary PhD program consists of 20% of the annual tuition for the thesis and an additional 10% for each yearly hour.
Master's students of the Rothberg International School are permitted to apply for PhD supplementary studies once most of their grades have been reported. They will be able to receive conditional acceptance and submit a confirmation of degree eligibility until the beginning of the studies.
