Well, before the Republican party embarked on this route in the presidential elections of 2008, Ariel Sharon tried it in Israel in 2005.Nothing perhaps can bring some sober judgment – rather than PR hype – into the meaning of McCain’s choice for VP better than a quick reminder of what has happened in Israel in the three years since.

Over the past couple of weeks the fate of Jerusalem emerged as the most visible hot spot in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Obama’s administration has been putting pressure on Israel to stop its construction in East Jerusalem, which is projected as the Palestinian capital in a future two-state solution.

סדרת הטלוויזיה "הבית הלבן", פרי עטו של אהרון סורקין, מתארת את החלום של אמריקה הליברלית והפרוגרסיבית על נשיא שמשקף את ערכיה באופן המלא והשנון ביותר. באחד מפרקיה, שכותרתו "עשרים שעות באמריקה", הצוות הבכיר של הבית הלבן נשאר תקוע באינדיאנה, לאחר שמטוסו של הנשיא המריא משם בטעות בלעדיהם. הומו־פוליטיקוס האינטלקטואלים מהחוף המזרחי נאלצים לפתע להתמודד לבדם עם תושבי המדינה החקלאית הזאת, ומגיבים בהשתאות וחוסר הבנה, מהולים בזלזול עמוק ובמעט חשש. התהום התרבותית והחברתית בינם לבין ה"הוז'יירס", כינוים של תושבי המקום, שמקורו אינו ברור, מזינה את המתח הקומי של האפיזודה כולה.

הפקולטה למדעי הרוח באוניברסיטה העברית עוברת בשנים האחרונות טלטלות לא פשוטות. צמצומים וירידה במספר הסטודנטים הביאו לסגירת עשרות קורסים. פיטורי מרצים מהסגל הזוטר גרמו למאבקים חוזרים ונשנים עמם ובכמה מקרים גם עם אנשי סגל בכיר. .מבחוץ התקבל הרושם כי הפקולטה בעלת ההיסטוריה המפוארת, שלימדו בה מרצים כמו לאה גולדברג ומרטין בובר, דועכת לפני כשנה וחצי נכנס לתפקידו דיקאן חדש בפקולטה, פרופ׳ דרור ורמן. בשיאו של המשבר בפקולטה, הוא ידע כי עליו לגבש מה בלימה אחרון בניסיון להציל אותה — תוכנית שמטרתה להבין מה הכרחי להשאיר בפקולטה ועל אילו קורסים אפשר לוותר.
