תקציר Background: VICKZ (IGF2BP1,2,3/ZBP1/Vg1RBP/IMP1,2,3) proteins bind RNA and help regulate many RNA-mediated processes. In the midbrain region of early chick embryos, VICKZ is expressed in the neural folds and along the basal surface of the neural epithelium, but, upon neural tube closure, is down-regulated in prospective cranial neural crest (CNC) cells, concomitant with their emigration and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Electroporation of constructs that modulate cVICKZ expression demonstrates that this down-regulation is both necessary and sufficient for CNC EMT. These results suggest that VICKZ down-regulation in CNC cell-autonomously promotes EMT and migration. Reduction of VICKZ throughout the embryo, however, inhibits CNC migration non-cell-autonomously, as judged by transplantation experiments in Xenopus embryos. Results and Conclusions: Given the positive role reported for VICKZ proteins in promoting cell migration of chick embryo fibroblasts and many types of cancer cells, we have begun to look for specific mRNAs that could mediate context-specific differences. We report here that the laminin receptor, integrin alpha 6, is down-regulated in the dorsal neural tube when CNC cells emigrate, this process is mediated by cVICKZ, and integrin alpha 6 mRNA is found in VICKZ ribonucleoprotein complexes. Significantly, prolonged inhibition of cVICKZ in either the neural tube or the nascent dermomyotome sheet, which also dynamically expresses cVICKZ, induces disruption of these epithelia. These data point to a previously unreported role for VICKZ in maintaining epithelial integrity.

Free roaming cats (FRC) are highly abundant in cities around the world. Increasing populations of these cats might result in impairment of cat welfare and cause nuisances and public health risks. In order to study the seasonal dynamics of FRC populations and its association with events of cat welfare impairment and nuisances, we analyzed a database of FRC-associated citizens' telephone complaint events, which were registered in five cities in Israel (total human population of 1.42 million residents) during the years 2007-2011. These complaint events were classified to the following six categories: cat's carcasses, kittens, parturition, aggressive behavior toward people, invasion to human facilities, and cat injuries and distress. Overall, 87,764 complaint events associated with these categories were registered in the five cities during the study period (123.2 complaint events per 10,000 citizens per year). Length of daylight was moderately correlated with the rate of complaints on kittens in the same month (r=0.64) and parturition in the previous month (r=0.54) (P<0.001). Both kitten and parturition-related complaints showed a prominent seasonal pattern, peaking in April and May, respectively, and declining gradually until November. 'Kittens' or 'parturition' were explicitly mentioned in 38%, 39% and 19%, respectively, of the complaints regarding cat aggressiveness toward people, cat invasion to human facilities and cat injuries and distress. In most of the cities the rate of citizen complaints regarding carcasses, aggression, invasion and injuries were still significantly correlated with rate of complaints regarding kittens after omission of these joint complaints and remained significant after controlling for seasonality. These findings imply an association of cat welfare impairment and nuisances with FRC reproduction intensity. The current study revealed the high rate of nuisances and potential public health hazards related to FRC, as well as the impairment of cat welfare, which might be merely 'the tip of the iceberg' of the real welfare situation of these cats. Further studies should examine the effectiveness of FRC population control strategies for the reduction of the rate of nuisances and public health risks related to FRC, as well as for improving their welfare.

תקציר INTRODUCTION: Obesity has been associated with an oxidative process, however there are controversies regarding the potential role of circulating antioxidant activity attributed to non-protein compounds. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relation between antioxidant activity levels and obesity related-indicators in Mexican young adults. METHODS: Anthropometric measures, serum lipids and uric acid were determined in 78 men and 90 women (a total of 168 individuals). Serum antioxidant activity in different fractions also was measured by using TEAC assay (TEACNP, TEACP and TEACTotal). RESULTS: TEACNP was positively correlated (p<0.05) BMI (r=0.307), WC (r=0.322), LDL (r=0.274), TC (r=0.293), TG (r=0.409) and UA (r=0.441). The antioxidant activity measured as TEACNP in individuals with obesity related-indicators was higher compared to those individuals without obesity-related indicators. When BMI, WC, HDL, LDL, TC, TG and UA were considered as obesity related-indicators, the higher the number of obesity related indicators (p<0.05) the higher the TEACNP values. However, when TEACP values decreased, the number of obesity related-indicators (p<0.05) increased. CONCLUSION: The positive association between TEACNP and obesity related-indicators suggests that apparently increase in TEACNP may not always indicate a healthier condition.

Publisher's Version תקציר We report the observation of diffraction cancellation for visible beams with widths from tens of wavelengths down to fractions of the optical wavelength. The phenomenon is observed at the transition from diffraction- to antidiffraction-dominated beam propagation, triggered by a thermal shock in a photorefractive nanodisordered lithium-enriched potassium-tantalate-niobate (KTN:Li) crystal. Here beams propagate without distortion, independently of intensity and size. Confirming the main prediction of the scale-free-optics model, we find a single unified light behavior that spans across the entire hierarchy of standard optical spatial scales, from wide plane-wave-like beams that obey geometrical optics down to ultranarrow beams with widths of the order of a single wavelength. In the course of our studies on structured reverse lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) as oleogels, a system was designed with the desired physical and rheology properties for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. The aqueous phase was partially replaced by glycerol to minimize bacteriological problems and obtain specific rheology characteristics. The constructed phase diagrams are based on ternary mixtures of glycerol monooleate (GMO), decane, water, and glycerol. The main lyotropic mesophase obtained in this study was reverse hexagonal derived from dilution line 8:2 (72 wt% GMO and 18 wt% decane) and 10 wt% water; or water:glycerol (wt ratios 3:1 and 1:1) mixture. It was found that heat-cool fluctuation caused formation of new pseudo-equilibrium structures with mesomorphic transformations to more fluid and less ordered mesostructures. Replacing up to 50 wt% of the water by glycerol significantly increases the gel phase region in the phase diagram, meaning more structural compositional options. The structural parameters were determined using cross-polarized light microscopy (CPLM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Rheological measurements revealed viscoelastic properties of lyotropic liquid crystals with a decrease in the elasticity (G'), plasticity (GaEuro(3)), and complex viscosity (eta\*\), as a function of increasing the glycerol content.

תקציר Recurrent genomic instability in cancer is attributed to positive selection and/or the sensitivity of specific genomic regions to breakage. Among these regions are fragile sites (FSs), genomic regions sensitive to replication stress conditions induced by the DNA polymerase inhibitor aphidicolin. However, the basis for the majority of cancer genomic instability hotspots remains unclear. Aberrant oncogene expression induces replication stress, leading to DNA breaks and genomic instability. Here we map the cytogenetic locations of oncogene-induced FSs and show that in the same cells, each oncogene creates a unique fragility landscape that only partially overlaps with aphidicolin-induced FSs. Oncogene-induced FSs colocalize with cancer breakpoints and large genes, similar to aphidicolin-induced FSs. The observed plasticity in the fragility landscape of the same cell type following oncogene expression highlights an additional level of complexity in the molecular basis for recurrent fragility in cancer.

תקציר PURPOSE: To compare hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development after radiofrequency (RF) ablation, partial surgical hepatectomy, and a sham operation and to inhibit HCC recurrence after RF ablation in a mouse model of spontaneously forming HCC in the setting of chronic inflammation (ie, the MDR2 knockout model). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Animal experiments were performed according to an approved animal care committee protocol. The authors compared the survival of MDR2 knockout mice (an inflammation-induced HCC model) that underwent RF ablation, 35% partial hepatectomy (ie, left lobectomy), or a sham operation (controls) by using Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis. Tumor load and tumor frequency in mice that underwent sham operation were further compared with those of mice treated with RF ablation at 1 month after therapy by using a two-tailed Student t test. Liver slices from mice treated with RF ablation were stained for $\alpha$-smooth muscle actin and Ki-67 to establish the role of liver regeneration in the tumorigenic effect of RF ablation. Finally, tumor load and tumor incidence were evaluated in mice treated with a c-met inhibitor after RF ablation by using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Ablation of 3.5% ± 0.02 of the MDR2 knockout mice liver induced increased tumor load (P = .007) and reduced survival (P = .03) in comparison to that of controls, with no significant difference to the 10-fold volume removal of partial hepatectomy. Seven days after RF treatment, the border zone of the coagulation zone was surrounded by $\alpha$-smooth muscle actin-positive activated myofibroblasts. A significant elevation of hepatocyte proliferation was also seen 7 days after RF ablation in the distant liver (ablated lobe: P = .003; untreated lobe: P = .02). A c-met inhibitor significantly attenuated HCC development in MDR2 knockout mice treated with RF ablation (P = .001). CONCLUSION: Liver regeneration induced by RF ablation facilitates c-met/hepatocyte growth factor axis-dependent HCC tumor formation after treatment in the MDR2 knockout model. Blockage of the c-met/hepatocyte growth factor axis attenuates HCC recurrence, raising the potential for therapeutic intervention to reverse this potentially deleterious tumorigenic effect.

Publisher's Version תקציר The high open-circuit potential (V-oc) achieved by perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is one of the keys to their success. The V-oc analysis is essential to understand their working mechanisms. A large number of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx PSCs were fabricated on single large-area substrates and their V-oc dependencies on illumination intensity, I-0, were measured showing three distinctive regions. Similar results obtained in Al2O3 based PSCs relate the effect to the compact TiO2 rather than the mesoporous oxide. We propose that two working mechanisms control the V-oc in PSCs. The rise of V-oc, at low I-0 is determined by the employed semiconductor n-type contact (TiO2 or MgO coated TiO2). In contrast, at I-0 close to AM1.5G, the employed oxide does not affect the achieved voltage. Thus, a change of regime from an oxide-dominated E-Fn (as in the dye sensitized solar cells) to an E-Fn, directly determined by the CH3NH3PbI3-xClx absorber is suggested.
