How do women travelling the colonial frontier create a feminine, and potentially less hierarchical type of modernity? And how does Neo-Victorian fiction explore gendered and racialized types of modernity through the use of travel? Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries (2013) represesnts the quest for a postcolonial and feminine modernity through the trope of the woman traveler, worker, storyteller and entrepreneur. In particular, protagonists Anna Whetherell and Lydia Wells oppose the highly racist and sexist societies of gold rush frontier towns of the 1860s New Zealand through solitary travel on foot, by sea and across textual layers. This paper argues that such independent solitary women travelers stand for a new representation of white women in colonial contexts and challenge traditional categories of Victorian femininity, such as the dichotomous opposition between the Angel in the House and the fallen woman. By shifting across white femininity and queer Chinese identities (in Anna’s case), and by embracing a masculine, capitalist model (for Lydia), Catton’s heroines survive, on their own, as members of a minority in the communities of white, male miners. The two women thus embody new types of femininity and, while placing themselves outside the colonial hierarchy, they question the social structure, the exploitation of the Other (the woman, the Chinese) and set an example for a more viable and more equal society born out of colonial settlement. Finally, while shaping modernity through their female gaze and a free way of travelling the peripheries, the two women also accomplish their own Bildung process and, forgers of their own fortunes, symbolize the shift from masculine, imperial modernity to a feminine, neo-Victorian, postcolonial paradigm.

Armelle Parey and Isabelle Roblin, PUN-Editions Universitaires de Lorraine; forthcoming, late 2017). She is currently co-editing Crossing Borders: Spaces, Nations and Empires in Victorian Travel (with Elvan Mutlu. Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars, 2017). Barbara teaches English Literature and Critical Theory at the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.

BACKGROUND: Current efforts to develop stem cell therapy as a novel treatment for neurointestinal diseases are limited by the unavailability of a model system to study cell transplantation in the human intestine. We propose that xenograft models support enteric nervous system (ENS) development in the fetal human intestine when transplanted into mice subcutaneously or intra-abdominally. METHODS: Fetal human small and large intestine were grafted onto the small intestinal mesentery and into the subcutaneous tissue of immunodeficient mice for up to 4 months. Intestinal cytoarchitecture and ENS development were studied using immunohistochemistry. KEY RESULTS: In both abdominal and subcutaneous grafts, the intestine developed normally with formation of mature epithelial and mesenchymal layers. The ENS was patterned in two ganglionated plexuses containing enteric neurons and glia, including cholinergic and nitrergic neuronal subtypes. c-Kit-immunoreactive interstitial cells of Cajal were present in the gut wall. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: Abdominal xenografts represent a novel model that supports the growth and development of fetal human intestine. This in vivo approach will be a useful method to study maturation of the ENS, the pathophysiology of neurointestinal diseases, and the long-term survival and functional differentiation of neuronal stem cells for the treatment of enteric neuropathies.

Tissue macrophages in many adult organs originate from yolk sac (YS) progenitors, which invade the developing embryo and persist by means of local self-renewal. However, the route and characteristics of YS macrophage trafficking during embryogenesis are incompletely understood. Here we show the early migration dynamics of YS-derived macrophage progenitors in vivo using fate mapping and intravital microscopy. From embryonic day 8.5 (E8.5) CX3CR1+ pre-macrophages are present in the mouse YS where they rapidly proliferate and gain access to the bloodstream to migrate towards the embryo. Trafficking of pre-macrophages and their progenitors from the YS to tissues peaks around E10.5, dramatically decreases towards E12.5 and is no longer evident from E14.5 onwards. Thus, YS progenitors use the vascular system during a restricted time window of embryogenesis to invade the growing fetus. These findings close an important gap in our understanding of the development of the innate immune system.

Several approaches using organozirconocene species for the remote cleavage of strained three-membered ring carbocycles are described. -Ene polysubstituted cyclopropanes, alkylidenecyclopropanes, -ene spiro[2.2]pentanes and -ene cyclopropyl methyl ethers were successfully transformed into stereodefined organometallic intermediates allowing an easy access to highly stereoenriched acyclic scaffolds in good yields and in most cases excellent selectivities. DFT calculations and isotopic labeling experiments were performed to delineate the origin of the obtained chemo- and stereoselectivities, demonstrating the importance of microreversibility.

We have investigated the defect perovskites A3M2I9 (A = Cs, Rb; M = Bi, Sb) as materials for radiation detection. The phase purity of Bridgman-grown A3M2I9 single crystals was confirmed via high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, while density functional theory calculations (DFT) show surprisingly dispersive bands in the out-of-plane direction for these layered materials, with low effective masses for both holes and electrons. Accordingly, each of the four A3M2I9 defect perovskites showed response to 241Am α-particle irradiation for hole and electron electrode configurations, a remarkable ambipolar response that resembles the 3D halide perovskites. The electron response spectra were used to estimate the mobility–lifetime product (μτ)e for electrons in these materials, with Rb3Bi2I9 showing the lowest (μτ)e value of 1.7 × 10–6 cm2 V–1 and Cs3Bi2I9 the highest (μτ)e of 5.4 × 10–5 cm2 V–1. The rise time of the α-particle-generated pulse was used to estimate the electron mobility μe of the A3M2I9 defect perovskites, which ranged from 0.32 cm2 V–1s–1 for Rb3Sb2I9 to 4.3 cm2 V–1s–1 in Cs3Bi2I9. Similar analysis of the hole response spectra yielded (μτ)h values for each A3M2I9 compound, with Cs3Bi2I9 again showing the highest (μτ)h value of 1.8 × 10–5 cm2 V–1, while Rb3Bi2I9 showed the lowest (μτ)h with 2.0 × 10–6 cm2 V–1. Rise time analysis gave hole mobilities ranging from 1.7 cm2 V–1 s–1 for Cs3Bi2I9 to 0.14 cm2 V–1 s–1 for Cs3Sb2I9. Comparing the experimental electron and hole mobilities to the effective masses obtained from DFT calculations revealed sizable discrepancies, possibly indicating self-trapping of charge carriers due to electron–phonon interactions. The α-particle response of the A3M2I9 defect perovskites demonstrates their potential as semiconductor radiation detectors, with Cs3Bi2I9 and Cs3Sb2I9 showing the most promise.
