Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid lead iodide perovskites have gained prominence due to their remarkable structural tunability, optoelectronic features, and moisture stability, which have rendered them as attractive alternatives to 3D MAPbI3 for optoelectronic devices. 2D multilayer lead bromide perovskites remain an unfathomed phase space with the lack of systematic studies to establish the structure, photophysical properties and stability behavior of this family of 2D halide perovskites. Herein, we present new members of bilayer lead bromide perovskites (CmH2m+1NH3)2(CH3NH3)Pb2Br7 (m = 6–8) that belong to the Ruddlesden–Popper structure type, incorporating long chain alkyl-monoammonium cations (CmH2m+1NH3) of hexylammonium (m = 6), heptylammonium (m = 7), and octylammonium (m = 8). A universal solution synthetic methodology for bulk multilayer lead bromide perovskites is presented with all structures solved and refined using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The studied bilayer lead bromide perovskites demonstrate a decrease in the lattice rigidity and lattice match of the inorganic perovskite layer–organic layer, as the alkyl-monoammonium chain length increases. In comparison to their iodide analogues, the bilayer lead bromide compounds exhibit elongation of their stacking axis despite the smaller dimensions of the [PbBr6]4− lattice, while their internal lattice strain was calculated to be reduced, inferring a greater lattice match between the inorganic [PbBr6]4− perovskite layer and organic layer. The (CmH2m+1NH3)2(CH3NH3)Pb2Br7 (m = 4, 6–8) compounds exhibit narrow-band emission near 2.5 eV. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) displays longer carrier lifetimes on the nanosecond time scale comparing to their iodide analogues, where electronic structure calculations indicate that the increase of the alkyl chain length and, thus, lattice softness enhances nonradiative recombinations. A complete set of air, light, and heat stability tests on unencapsulated thin films of (CmH2m+1NH3)2(CH3NH3)Pb2Br7 (m = 4, 6–8) and MAPbBr3 show they are stable in ambient air for at least 5 months, exhibiting greater extrinsic stability than the 2D lead iodide congeners. Extraordinarily, 3D MAPbBr3 films prove to be more stable than films of 2D lead bromide perovskites, in contrast to MAPbI3 which is less stable than the 2D lead iodide perovskites.

Domestication disconnects an animal from its natural environment and diet, imposing changes in the attendant microbial community. We examine these changes in Philornis downsi (Muscidae), an invasive parasitic fly of land birds in the Galapagos Islands. Using a 16S rDNA profiling approach we studied the microbiome of larvae and adults of wild and laboratory-reared populations. These populations diverged in their microbiomes, significantly more so in larval than in adult flies. In field-collected second-instar larvae, Klebsiella (70.3%) was the most abundant taxon, while in the laboratory Ignatzschineria and Providencia made up 89.2% of the community. In adults, Gilliamella and Dysgonomonas were key members of the core microbiome of field-derived females and males but had no or very low representation in the laboratory. Adult flies harbour sex-specific microbial consortia in their gut, as male core microbiomes were significantly dominated by Klebsiella. Thus, P. downsi microbiomes are dynamic and shift correspondingly with life cycle and diet. Sex-specific foraging behaviour of adult flies and nest conditions, which are absent in the laboratory, may contribute to shaping distinct larval, and adult male and female microbiomes. We discuss these findings in the context of microbe-host co-evolution and the implications for control measures.

Nasal nanovesicular delivery systems (NVS) containing the noncontrolled analgesic drugs Ketoprofen, Butorphanol or Tramadol, incorporated in a phospholipid nanovesicular carrier, were designed and investigated. The systems were first characterized for their physicochemical properties. Due to their composition, comprising propylene glycol as a lipid bilayers fluidizer, these systems contain soft vesicles. Pharmacokinetic profiles of Tramadol in plasma and brain and of Ketoprofen in plasma were also assessed. The analgesic effect of each of the three tested drugs was evaluated in the acetic acid mice model for pain. One important result obtained in this work is that the concentration of Tramadol in rats' plasma and brain increased rapidly after administration, reaching a peak value 10 min after administration with a C(max) of 2 to 5 folds greater than that for the oral or nasal non-vesicular treatments, respectively. In the case of Ketoprofen, the peak of the drug level in plasma was measured 10 min post nasal administration in NVS. The C(max) was three-fold higher relative to oral administration of this drug. The Armenian highlands encompasses rugged and environmentally diverse landscapes and is characterized by a mosaic of distinct ecological niches and large temperature gradients. Strong seasonal fluctuations in resource availability along topographic gradients likely prompted Pleistocene hominin groups to adapt by adjusting their mobility strategies. However, the role that elevated landscapes played in hunter-gatherer settlement systems during the Late Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic [MP]) remains poorly understood. At 1640 m above sea level, the MP site of Kalavan 2 (Armenia) is ideally positioned for testing hypotheses involving elevation-dependent seasonal mobility and subsistence strategies. Renewed excavations at Kalavan 2 exposed three main occupation horizons and ten additional low densities lithic and faunal assemblages. The results provide a new chronological, stratigraphical, and paleoenvironmental framework for hominin behaviors between ca. 60 to 45 ka. The evidence presented suggests that the stratified occupations at Kalavan 2 locale were repeated ephemerally most likely related to hunting in a high-elevation within the mountainous steppe landscape.
