1)    Students are required to adhere to the safety regulations. Any incidents or dangerous situations that may cause harm to your health or that of those around you must be reported immediately to members of senior staff or the safety officer.

2)    Each campus has a safety officer who can be contacted during working hours, as follows:

Outside of regular working hours, contact the campus security hotline (85000).

3)    Individual safety briefings will be provided at each laboratory by the head of the laboratory.
The following are a number of the safety regulations that apply to a student upon entry to teaching and research laboratories at the Hebrew University.

4)    Familiarize yourself with:
1. Gas shut-off valve and electricity shutdown switch, and the emergency shutdown switch for the electricity.
2. Safety showers and eyewash stations.
3. First-aid equipment.
4. Fire extinguishing equipment and fire blankets.
5. Escape routes.
6. Fume hood switches.

5)    Familiarize yourself with the following restrictions:
1. It is forbidden to work in a laboratory without an instructor or lab employee.
2. It is forbidden to carry out work or experiments that have not been approved by the instructor.
3. It is forbidden to use defective equipment or machinery.
4. It is forbidden to pour away flammable liquids.
5. It is forbidden to pour leftover liquids and materials into the sink before you have checked to ensure there is no danger in doing so.
6. It is forbidden to pour or vaporize flammable liquids in the vicinity of a naked flame.
7. It is forbidden to handle poisonous materials without the appropriate equipment and training.
8. It is forbidden to use hazardous materials and equipment without appropriate safety equipment.

6)    Do the following:
1. Protect your eyes with university-approved safety goggles.
2. Ensure that you and others in your vicinity are protected against the potential hazards arising from your work.
3. Protect yourself from hazards arising from your neighbors’ work.
4. Disconnect the electricity and gas you were using before leaving the laboratory and after ensuring that this does not put the work or safety of others at risk.

7)    It is forbidden to enter laboratories that pose a potential risk to eye safety without appropriate protection.

8)    In case of fire:
a. Press the emergency button (alarm) – if there is one.
b. Move others away from the danger area.
c. Report it immediately to the campus security hotline.
d. Close the main gas valves that lead to the area of the incident (it is forbidden to reopen the gas valves without permission from security personnel).
e. Shut off the power supply to the area of the incident.
f. Do not use water to put out the fire before the electricity has been switched off.
g. Activate the sprinklers as needed and if necessary.
h. Do not use the elevators in case of fire.
i. When security or safety personnel or fire services arrive, provide them with as much information as possible and follow their instructions.

9)    Evacuating casualties:
a. Casualties will be evacuated to A&E at the nearest hospital to the campus where the incident has taken place. For the Edmond J. Safra Campus, Givat Ram – Shaare Zedek Medical Center, for Ein Kerem Campus – Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center.
b. Calling vehicles for medical evacuation from Magen David Adom or other organizations that charge will be the responsibility of either the security team or in coordination with them.

10) In case of an incident involving hazardous and/or radioactive chemicals (spillage, explosion, leak etc.) take extreme care and immediately alert the safety personnel.
