Institute of Chemistry

The Institute of Chemistry was founded by Dr. Chaim Weizmann in 1923, two years before the official declaration of the founding of the Hebrew University. Today, a century later, the Institute of Chemistry is a national and global leader in modern chemistry as well as the basic science and applied disciplines. Members of the institute engage in cutting-edge research in different areas of chemistry: organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, theoretical, nanotechnology and material science. Contributions made by researchers at the institute in different areas have led to breakthroughs in nanoscience and nanotechnology, the development and application of advanced theoretical methods for large quantum system calculations, development of pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics, research into production and storage of renewable energies, development of advanced materials and 3D-printing. One core area of focus for the institute’s researchers is to encourage economic and ecological security as part of the institute’s output from its public-facing research. Much of the research creates a launchpad for startup companies based on innovations developed within the institute. Members of the institute are engaged in a wide array of global partnerships, and many of the academic staff participate in transnational projects. The collaborations between researchers at the institute and local and global industry provide fertile ground, offering graduates training for working in startups and advanced industries. Graduates of the institute hold prominent roles in Israeli and global academia and in advanced industries.
