VO2 has garnered much attention in recent years as a promising candidate for thermochromic window applications due to rising awareness about energy conservation. However, the trade-off between improving the luminous transmittance (Tlum) and solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) limits the commercialization of VO2-based smart windows. Four major nanostructuring approaches were implemented to enhance both Tlum and ΔTsol, namely nanocomposites, nanoporous films, biomimetic moth-eye structures and anti-reflection coating (ARC) multilayers. This work demonstrates a novel approach that fabricates periodic, micro-patterned structures of VO2 using a facile screen printing method. The micro-patterned structure is able to favorably transmit visible light without sacrificing high near-IR modulation, and the patterned film shows improved Tlum (67% vs. 60%) and ΔTsol (8.8% vs. 6.9%) compared with continuous films. By varying the thickness, periodicity and solid concn., this approach can give a ΔTsol of 14.9% combined with a Tlum of 43.3%, which is comparable, if not superior to, some of the best reported results found using other approaches. Nano-patterned materials are beneficial for applications such as solar cells, opto- electronics, and sensing owing to their periodic structure and high interfacial area. Here, we present a non-lithographic approach for assembling polyelectrolytes into periodic nanoscale patterns over cm(2)-scale areas. Chemically modified block copolymer thin films featuring alternating charged and neutral domains are used as patterned substrates for electrostatic self-assembly. In-depth characterization of the deposition process using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, including the state-of-the-art scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), reveals both the selective deposition of the polyelectrolyte on the charged copolymer domains as well as gradual changes in the film topography that arise from further penetration of the solvent molecules and possibly also the polyelectrolyte into these domains. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of creating nano-patterned polyelectrolyte layers, which opens up new opportunities for structured functional coating fabrication.

CONSPECTUS: Organic inorganic halide perovskites are in consensus to revolutionize the field of photovoltaics and optoelectronic devices due to their superior optical and electronic properties which are unprecedented in comparison to those of other solution processed semiconductors. These hybrid materials are used as light absorbers and also as charge carriers which makes them very versatile to be implemented and studied in a multitude of fields. Traditionally, the working paradigm in solar cells and optoelectronic devices' characterization has been that the properties of photovoltaic materials remain stable following illumination of varying times and intensities. However, recently there has been a growing number of reports on prolonged illumination-dependent physical changes in perovskite films and perovskite based devices. The changes are reversible and range from structural transformations and differences in optical characteristics, to an increase in optoelectronic properties and physical parameters. In this Account, we review the physical changes in three reported model systems which display changes under prolonged illumination of light intensities of similar to 0.01-1 sun. The three systems are (i) a free-standing perovskite film on a glass substrate, (ii) a symmetrical system with nonselective electrical contacts, and (iii) a working perovskite solar cell (either a planar or a porous structure). We examine each model system and discuss its photoinduced physical changes and conclude with the implications on future experimentation design, data analysis, and characterization that involve organic inorganic halide perovskites illumination. Since hybrid perovskites are considered to be mixed ionic electronic conductors in nature, ions that migrate in the perovskite under electrical fields can influence its properties. Therefore, an important distinction is made between photoinduced effects and photo and electric field induced effects. Thus, photoinduced effects are designated as observed effects in illuminated free-standing films or symmetrical devices without selective contacts. In contrast, photo- and electric field induced effects are designated as observed effects under open-circuit potential or during voltage scanning (internal electrical field exists across, the device). In the latter case, the two effects are superimposed and it is difficult to evaluate the relative influence of each one (light or electric field). However, we show that the magnitude and the importance of the photoinduced effect are substantial.

The olive tree is generally characterized by relatively low final fruit set consequential to a significant rate of undeveloped pistils, pistil abortion, and flower and fruitlet abscission. These processes are acknowledged to be governed by competition for resources between the developing vegetative and reproductive organs. To study the role of phosphorus (P) nutritional level on reproductive development, trees were grown under four levels of P for three years in large containers. Phosphorus nutritional level was positively related to rate of reproductive bud break, inflorescence weight, rate of hermaphrodite flowers, pistil weight, fruitlet persistence, fruit set and the consequential total number of fruits. The positive impact of P nutrition on the productivity parameters was not related to carbohydrate reserves or to carbohydrate transport to the developing inflorescence. Phosphorous deficient trees showed significant impairment of assimilation rate, and yet, carbohydrates were accumulated in inflorescences at levels comparable to or higher than trees receiving high P. In contrast to female reproductive organs, pollen viability was consistently higher in P deficient trees, possibly due to the enhanced carbohydrate availability. Overall, the positive effect of P on female reproductive development was found to be independent of the total carbohydrate availability. Hence, P is speculated to have a direct influence on reproductive processes. © 2016 Erel et al. nirSemiconductor–metal hybrid nanoparticles manifest efficient light-induced spatial charge separation at the semiconductor–metal interface, as demonstrated by their use for hydrogen generation via water splitting. Here, we pioneer a study of their functionality as efficient photocatalysts for the formation of reactive oxygen species. We observed enhanced photocatalytic activity forming hydrogen peroxide, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals upon light excitation, which was significantly larger than that of the semiconductor nanocrystals, attributed to the charge separation and the catalytic function of the metal tip. We used this photocatalytic functionality for modulating the enzymatic activity of horseradish peroxidase as a model system, demonstrating the potential use of hybrid nanoparticles as active agents for controlling biological processes through illumination. The capability to produce reactive oxygen species by illumination on-demand enhances the available peroxidase-based tools for research and opens the path for studying biological processes at high spatiotemporal resolution, laying the foundation for developing novel therapeutic approaches.
