This is a critical edition of what is probably the earliest surviving treatise in Arabic on "The Virtues of Jerusalem" (Faḍāʾil bayt al-maqdis), written by Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī, the Shāfiʿī preacher of al-Aqṣā Mosque at the beginning of the 5th/11th century. Its precision in giving the chain of transmitters (isnād) of each tradition enables us to reconsider some theories concerning the sanctity of Jerusalem in Islam, the sources of its holiness, the polemics concerning its place in the hierarchy of the holy cities and the beginnings of the Faḍāʾil bayt al-maqdis literature. Each tradition was systematically compared by the editor with others cited in different treatises of this genre, most of which are still unpublished. The traditions were also examined in relation to other materials from geographic, historical and ḥadīth sources dealing with the glorification of Jerusalem.
The editor's introductions (39 pages in Arabic and 22 pages in French) deal with the religious, political and local elements which influenced Muslim attitudes regarding the place of Jerusalem, both directly and indirectly. The introductions also contain a discussion of the literary sources of the Faḍā’il bayt al-maqdis literature .
This edition is based on a manuscript that was copied or written at the time of the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin in 583/1187.

Severe inflammatory lesions were induced in the periodontal tissues of the rat following the intragingival injection of lipoteichoic acid (LTA) from Streptococcus mutans. There was no difference in the severity and distribution of the lesions between nonimmunized rats and animals immunized against LTA after antigenic challenge. The lesions are characterized by the occurrence of granulation tissue, massive infiltration of PMNs, abscess formation, bone resorption, and new bone formation. Deacylated LTA and saline caused relatively mild inflammation, and no significant bone resorption or new bone formation was evident. The peak response was reached after 3 intragingival infections. The mechanisms by which LTA caused the pathological alterations in the rat periodontium and the possible relations of this experimental model to periodontal disease in the human are discussed.
Kinetics and stereochem. of Rh/Al2O3-catalyzed hydrogenations of p-(Me3C)2C6H4 (I), p-(Me3C)2C6H4 (II), Me3CPh (III), and p-MeC6H4CMe3 (IV) were studied as models for the mechanism of hydrogenation of benzene rings. At approx. atm. pressure, the rates are 0 order in arene, 1st order in H and increased in the order III, I \textless IV \textless II. In competition expts. the order of reactivity is III \textgreater IV \textgreater I \textgreater II. The formation of cyclohexene-type intermediates, dependent on increased pressure, was discussed. A dissociative mechanism due to bulky CMe3 groups was rejected; the orientation of the CMe3 groups, however, affect both the rate of hydrogenation and the proportion of products formed via subsequent alternate reaction paths. Buried beneath 5-10 meters of sand dunes in the Gaza Strip lies a Late Bronze Age cemetery that originally contained at least 40 anthropoid clay coffins and large quantities of bronze, faience, and alabaster vessels, figurines, scarabs, jewelry of gold and semiprecious stones, and pottery from Mycenaean Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt, as well as local Canaanite vessels. Unfortunately, most of the graves had been plundered in clandestine digs over the years; some had even been robbed in antiquity. In this report, three excavated anthropoid coffins and their rich funerary offerings receive full publication. The skeletal remains of the nine individuals interred in these coffins are also analyzed. The concluding discussion refers to the larger picture of the cemetery gained through the illicitly dug finds as well as the excavated material. The volume is lavishly illustrated with photographs and line drawings.
This study, which begins with a comprehensive corpus of proto-Aeolic capitals and discussions of their origin, ornamentation, positioning, typology, and dating, also offers an examination of the special features and construction techniques at the royal centers of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Ashlar masonry, with which the proto-Aeolic capitals were closely associated, is analyzed in all its aspects and compared to the stone masonry of neighboring cultures. The presentation concludes with a discussion of the question of Phoenician influence on Israelite masonry.
