Polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) implants were subcutaneously placed in the back of diabetic and normal rats. After three months the rats were killed and the fibrous capsule around the implants was histologically and biochemically examined. A significant quantitative difference (p less than 0.001) was found in the thickness of the capsules, which were two to three times thicker in the diabetic animals. The biochemistry showed an increase of neutral salt-soluble collagen in the diabetic group; electrophoresis revealed only type I collagen in the diabetic and type I and III in the normal rats. From this experimental trial it seems that diabetes mellitus is another factor in formation of a thick capsule around silicone implants.
Chondromyxoid fibroma is a benign skeletal tumor which rarely affects the jaws. Only 10 cases have been found in the literature, all of them located in the mandible. In the present articles, 2 additional cases are described, one of them being the first reported case located in the maxilla. Up-to-date clinical and pathological data of 2 reported cases and a review of the literature are presented.
This book is not a Coptic grammar, nor is it cast in the semblance of one: it is a series of studies of a fairly central area of Coptic syntax, a detailed systematic charting of a subsystem or more or less continuous range of grammatical phenomena.
Thirty-four femoral necks from human cadavers were measured by techniques assessing bone density and bone mineral density, and by the Singh index. These methods are based on photon interaction with biological components and can be applied noninvasively for clinical evaluation of changes in skeletal status. Trabecular bone volume, mineralized bone volume, and relative osteoid volume were evaluated histomorphometrically using undecalcified histologic sections obtained from the same samples. The trabecular and mineralized bone volumes showed significant correlations with the bone density and mineral density. These results enhance the validity of recently developed photon-interaction techniques for evaluating bone properties.
The esterification of glyceryl monostearate [31566-31-1] with maleic anhydride [108-31-6] was studied by anal. wet and GLC methods to parameterize and optimize the reaction and maximize the desired yield. Prolonged esterification and temps. \textgreater110-120° increased the diglyceride and hydrophobic product yield. Higher molar ratios of ester to anhydride increased esterification yield. The mechanism and kinetics of the reaction were also detd. [on SciFinder(R)]
The dissocn. const. of stearic acid dimer was detd. in four different solvents, using a Fourier transform IR technique. The $Δ$H obtained for each solvent decrease as the solvation of stearic acid increases. The results are relevant to the crystn. process of stearic acid from soln. which may lead to different polymorphic forms depending on the different crystn. parameters. [on SciFinder(R)]
