About Us
The Language Center is responsible for the study of eight modern languages taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The center was established in 2017 in order to implement and maintain standards of excellence in language acquisition, in keeping with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Contemporary action-oriented approaches to language instruction, including in higher education, define learning outcomes in terms of what learners can do in the target language. All languages are taught through intensive use of the language itself, from day one. Learners engage in real-world tasks to construct and negotiate meaningful oral and written communication, building the confidence to function in the target language in the classroom and with speakers outside of the classroom.
Aligning the objectives and learning outcomes of the Hebrew University language courses with the CEFR opens the door to student exchange and to mutual recognition of communicative competencies. As the first Israeli university to implement a CEFR-aligned curriculum, it is imperative that we learn from our international partners and we are very fortunate to be collaborating with leading language teaching and testing organizations worldwide.
