A Rigorous Approach to Data Privacy (with Applications to Adaptive Data Analysis):
What can users of microdata formally guarantee to the individuals (or firms) in a dataset, regarding their privacy? We will retell a few stories, well-known in data-privacy circles, of failed anonymization attempts in publicly released datasets. We will then provide an introduction to several ideas from the literature on differential privacy, an active literature in computer science that studies formal approaches to preserving the privacy of individuals in statistical databases. Finally, we will discuss applications of the differential privacy toolkit to the prevention of overfitting in adaptive data analysis settings.
