Longing for the Blue Sky
Urban Air Quality and the Individual Decision to Immigrate?

Bio: Yan Zhang is a postdoctoral in the Environmental Economics and Management, working with Professor Ohad Raveh. She focuses on natural resource economics and environmental economics, and mainly studies on Chinese issues such as the Dutch disease and public health caused by pollution.

Abstract: Based on the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) Data and the air pollution emissions data, we empirically investigate whether the migration decision-making is associated with urban air quality. The empirical results from the Logit model show that there is a “vote by foot” rule in the migration decisions in China, which means labor forces commonly attempt to escape cities with air pollution. Then, we also find that air quality is inferior to industrial structures, wages, and public services in terms of influencing factors of urban selection. Finally, heterogeneous analysis indicates that compared with others, female labor force and young labor force have higher requirements on air quality while highly educated labor force has lower ones.

The online meeting will be held on Sunday, April 11, 2021, 16:15-17:45
