Daniel Ilan is a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and is based in Cleary Gottlieb’s New York office. His practice focuses on intellectual property (IP), cybersecurity and privacy law. He has significant experience in representing leading multinational corporations and private equity firms in IP, technology and privacy issues arising in transactional contexts, particularly transactions involving acquisition of or investment in IP, data and various technologies. He regularly conducts diligence on multinational target companies with respect to their IP and technology assets and their compliance with data protection, cybersecurity and privacy laws, and proposes remediation steps for clients acquiring such companies. His expertise also includes crafting IP, privacy and cyber-protections for buyers and sellers in M&A agreements. Daniel also has significant experience analyzing and revising privacy policies, structuring corporate operations to ensure compliance with privacy laws and drafting and negotiating privacy and cybersecurity provisions in vendor and data transfer contracts.

Daniel regularly writes and speaks on IP, cybersecurity and privacy matters, and has recently co-authored “NY Regulations Set The Bar High For Cybersecurity Standards” (Law360, August 24, 2017), “No Laches, More Problems: SCA Hygiene’s Impact on M&A” (Law360, May 1, 2017), “New York Regulators Propose Cybersecurity Requirements for Financial Institutions” (Pratt’s Privacy & Cybersecurity Law Report, January 2017) and “Navigating the Privacy Traps in M&A” (Law360, November 2016).

 

He is a member of the Board of Directors of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, a preeminent legal aid organization providing pro bono legal representation to artists, fashion designers and nonprofit arts and cultural organizations.

Daniel joined Cleary Gottlieb in 2000 and became a partner in 2015. From 2000 to 2005, he was resident in the Brussels office, and from 2005 to 2006, he was resident in the Paris office.

He received an LL.M. from College of Europe, Bruges, and an LL.B. from HUJI.
