The New Ecology of Expressive Moods in Early-Modern South India

The European Research Council project, “The New Ecology of Expressive Moods in Early-Modern South India,” [NEEM], focuses attention on the sixteenth- through eighteenth centuries in all the major languages, regions, and cultures of South India and on all the expressive domains:  literature, music, painting, sculpture, architecture, theater, and dance (along with the theoretical and philosophical sources that document and explore artistic performance and practice). We are working under the assumption that the whole of South India constituted a single, multi-lingual, integrated eco-system, and that the major themes and issues that emerged in this period are reflected, always in distinctive ways, in Telugu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Dakhni Urdu, Persian, and Marathi. The core members of the team include four post-doctoral fellows, two Ph.D. candidates, and two M.A. students along with senior scholars from the Hebrew University and a wide penumbra of colleagues from all over the world who contribute to our annual workshops and sometimes join our ongoing reading groups. Although the pandemic has limited some of our plans, in principle we hope to bring the core group to India once a year to witness performances of Kudiyattam, Yaksagana, Teyyam, and other genres and to study temple sites rich in painting and sculpture from this period. We are also closely studying the economic and social history of the NEEM period in the various regions of the south, including the Deccan, and extending also to Sri Lanka and to Java. Among the themes that have assumed salience in our work are:  a newly crystallizing individual subjectivity and its associated modes of introspection; the reconfigured relation to the past, including a complex process of regrammaticalization in linguistics and poetics; kingship and state formation, and political culture more generally; the expansion of the geographical horizon and inter-regional connections; and the emergence of empirical natural science along with a rich literature of technological innovation. The studies now being written by members of our team have already transformed our understanding of South India in the critical period before an imported modernism, with its alien modes of thought, took hold.
