W/O/W double emulsions (DEs) stabilized by charged sol. complexes of whey protein isolate (WPI) and modified pectins were investigated in relation to their stability and the release of two types of electrolytes, NaCl and sodium ascorbate. WPI alone cannot properly stabilize the DEs. The droplet size is relatively large (100 $μ$m) and increases with time. However, addn. of modified pectin to form a sol. complex with WPI significantly improved the stability. DEs prepd. with two types of oils (medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and R(+)-limonene) were studied by measuring droplet size, creaming, viscosity, and electrolyte release. Irresp. of their very different oil phase nature, both emulsions were stable against coalescence, but R(+)-limonene formed smaller droplets (25 $μ$m) than MCT (35 $μ$m). The electrolyte release rate was significantly higher from the R(+)-limonene that formed DEs with much lower viscosity. R(+)-limonene-DE released 75% of the NaCl after 28 days, while MCT-DE released only 50%. NaCl was released more slowly than sodium ascorbate. Apparently, the release mechanism from R(+)-limonene-DE was found to be "thinning the outer interface and release of the entire inner droplets" while it seems that the release from MCT-DE was slower and "diffusion controlled". DEs stabilized by WPI/C63 released 12% of the sodium ascorbate after 1 day in milk and remained stable for at least 8 days. However, DEs stabilized with only WPI released about 50% of the sodium ascorbate after 1 day, and phase sepd. after 8 days. [on SciFinder(R)]

We show how charge transfer excitations at molecular complexes can be calculated quantitatively using time-dependent density functional theory. Predictive power is obtained from range-separated hybrid functionals using nonempirical tuning of the range-splitting parameter. Excellent performance of this approach is obtained for a series of complexes composed of various aromatic donors and the tetracyanoethytene acceptor, paving the way to systematic nonempirical quantitative studies of charge-transfer excitations in real systems.

The objective was to compare the reproductive performances associated with the first (Cycle-1), second (Cycle-2), and mid-season (MS-Cycle) ovulations of the breeding season in donor mares that were treated with equine-FSH (eFSH) in the early vernal transition. Mares (n=15) kept under ambient light were examined ultrasonographically per-rectum starting January 30. When an ovarian follicle > or =25mm in diameter was detected, twice daily eFSH treatments were initiated. The eFSH treatments ceased when a follicle > or =35mm was detected, and 36h later hCG was administered. Thereafter, mares were artificially inseminated every 48h until ovulation (Day 0). Trans-cervical embryo recovery attempts were performed on Day 8, and subsequently PGF2alpha was administered. Equine FSH was not administered in the subsequent estrous cycles. In Cycle-2 and in the MS-Cycle, hCG was administered when a follicle > or =35mm was detected; breeding, embryo recovery, and PGF2alpha administration, were similar to Cycle-1. Mares had an untreated estrous cycle (no treatment or breeding) between Cycle-2 and the MS-Cycle. All mares developed follicle(s) > or =35mm after 4.9+/-0.6 days of eFSH treatment, and subsequently ovulations occurred; mean (95% CI) interval from treatment initiation to ovulation was 7.9 (6.5-9.3) days. The number of preovulatory follicles (> or =30mm) at the time of hCG administration (Cycle-1: 2.2+/-0.3 compared with Cycle-2: 1.0+/-0 compared with MS-Cycle: 1.1+/-0.1 follicles), and the number of ovulations (2.5+/-0.4 compared with 1.0+/-0 compared with 1.1+/-0.1 ovulations) were greater (p<0.05) in Cycle-1. Nevertheless, mean embryo numbers did not differ among cycles (0.8+/-0.2 compared with 0.5+/-0.1 compared with 0.5+/-0.1 embryo/mare). On average, embryo morphology grade was less (p<0.05) in Cycle-1 as compared to non-eFSH cycles (combined Cycle-2 and MS-Cycle). This impaired embryo quality could be due to a seasonal effect, or negative effect of the eFSH treatment, which was possibly related to alterations in the hormonal environment (estradiol-17beta and progesterone). A prolonged IOI (>21 days) was recorded in 7 of 15 mares following the Cycle-1 ovulation, but not subsequently. In conclusion, eFSH treatment of vernal transitional donor mares stimulated ovulation within only few days of treatment, and the following embryo recovery rate was at least as good as in the subsequent estrous cycles; however, on average, embryos were morphologically impaired. In subsequent estrous cycles in the breeding season, ovulations, embryo recovery rates, and embryo variables did not appear to be negatively affected; however, the first inter-ovulatory interval of the breeding season was prolonged in approximately half of the mares.
Mu (?) rhythms are EEG oscillations between 8–13 Hz distinguished from alpha by having more anterior distribution and being desynchronized by motor rather than visual activity. Evidence accumulating during the last decade suggests that the desynchronization of ? rhythms (? suppression) might be also a manifestation of a human Mirror Neuron System (MNS). To further explore this hypothesis we used a paradigm that, in a previous fMRI study, successfully activated this putative MNS in humans. Our direct goal was to provide further support for a link between modulation of ? rhythms and the MNS, by finding parallels between the reported patterns of fMRI activations and patterns of ? suppression. Osteoarthritis (OA) affects both cartilage and bone tissues, and the subsequent breakdown of the two tissues appears to be interrelated. The interest in the role of subchondral bone changes with OA is growing, and one suggestion is that a simple inverse correlation exists between the cartilage loss and increased bone mineral density. In this work the STR/ort mouse is used as a model for human OA, in order to investigate disease progression. The aim of the work is to elucidate the tempero-spatial relationships between bone and cartilage architecture and determine whether a simple inverse correlation is satisfactory. We employ 3D whole joint quantitative imaging techniques for assessment of subchondral bone and articular cartilage. The knee joints of mice aged 3, 4, 7 and 10 months are scanned with muCT and then the tibial plateaus are scanned with CLSM. The results show that depending on site (medial and lateral), compartment (epiphyseal, metaphyseal, cortical), and age (3, 4, 7, 10 months), the subchondral bone undergoes changes that lead to an altered architecture. This is primarily seen as densification of the cortex and epiphysis in the STR/ort mice, with a significant change occurring between 7 and 10 months, while the medial cartilage thickness is significantly reduced after 7 months. Using a novel multimodal imaging approach, morphometric changes in the murine osteoarthritic knee joint are elucidated. It is seen that a complex interplay of events - both spatially and temporally - is involved in OA onset and progression. The initial measured differences between the two strains suggest a possible morphological phenotype involved in OA resistance/vulnerability. Temporally the changes have a strong strain:age dependence, although no separate timeline of events between the two tissues could be discerned. Spatially, the changes to medial and lateral morphometry across the cartilage and bone, indicate a relationship to altered joint mechanics.

Revealing the relationships between perceptual representations in the brain and mechanisms of adult perceptual learning is of great importance, potentially leading to significantly improved training techniques both for improving skills in the general population and for ameliorating deficits in special populations. In this review, we summarize the essentials of reverse hierarchy theory for perceptual learning in the visual and auditory modalities and describe the theory's implications for designing improved training procedures, for a variety of goals and populations.

In this paper we attempt to identify which peer collaboration characteristics may be accountable for conceptual change through interaction. We focus on different socio-cognitive aspects of the peer dialogue and relate these with learning gains on the dyadic, as well as the individual level. The scientific topic that was used for this study concerns natural selection, a topic for which students’ intuitive conceptions have been shown to be particularly robust. Learning tasks were designed according to the socio-cognitive conflict instructional paradigm. After receiving a short instructional intervention on natural selection, paired students were asked to collaboratively construct explanations for certain evolutionary phenomena while engaging in dialectical argumentation. Two quantitative coding schemes were developed, each with a different granularity: The first assessed discrete dialogue moves that pertained to dialectical argumentation and to consensual explanation development. The second scheme characterized the dialogue as a whole on a number of socio-cognitive dimensions. Results from analyses on the dyadic as well as the individual level revealed that the engagement in dialectical argumentation predicted conceptual learning gains, whereas consensual explanation development did not. These findings open up new venues for research on the mechanisms of learning in and from peer collaboration.
